When Does the Muffler Need to Be Replaced?

The muffler generally needs to be replaced in your automobile between 40,000 miles and 80,000 miles. You are likely to get two to four years out of the factory muffler. After this time, we may need to replace the muffler because it is damaged or corroded. The muffler does more than muffle the exhaust system noise. It also helps to route the exhaust away from the engine and out of the tailpipe. Let’s talk about the signs that your muffler needs to be replaced. Do not worry. We are here to help.

Loud Noise

If your automobile is extremely loud, this is an indication that the muffler is damaged. You will notice that your car rumbles and roars particularly when you press down on the accelerator. It may seem cool at first because your automobile will sound like a race car. This being said, you need to have the muffler replaced as soon as possible to avoid getting a ticket for the noise.

Corrosion

An old muffler can also get corroded. Unfortunately, this corrosion can eat through the muffler and create holes that will release the exhaust system noise. In fact, if your automobile is louder than it normally is, you likely have a hole in the muffler. You can look at your muffler to see if there is any rust on it or if there are any visible holes or other types of damage such as dents.

Leaking Water

An old muffler can also start to leak water. Unfortunately, this water encourages the corrosion of the muffler. As such, when you inspect the muffler, if you see water dripping from it, drive to our shop. The leaking water is a sign that the muffler is damaged and needs to be replaced. Simple condensation is okay, but leaking water is a sign of muffler problems.

Overheating

Finally, your automobile may start to overheat if the muffler is leaking. Unfortunately, it can introduce hot exhaust into the engine that will increase the engine’s temperature. As such, your car, truck, or utility vehicle will overheat every time that you drive it. It is important that you avoid driving your vehicle if the engine is running too hot. Operating the automobile could damage the engine.

As we mentioned above, we are here to help. Call our auto service shop today to schedule an appointment for your automobile if you are having muffler problems.
