If your SUV’s radiator has stopped working, we can help. We offer full-service auto repair. We can service your SUV so it is always safe, reliable, and efficient. The radiator will last longer if it is serviced every 30,000 miles. Radiators last an average of eight to 10 years. Below are the symptoms that your radiator may be failing in your SUV.
What the Radiator Does
Let’s start with the radiator. The radiator is located directly behind the grille, in front of your engine. The radiator’s function is dependent on this location. It uses the air coming in through the grille. The radiator stores engine coolant and circulates it through the engine. The radiator then takes the coolant back to reduce its temperature before it circulates again through the engine.
The radiator is equipped with air inlets and a fan to cool the coolant. To draw heat from the engine, cold coolant must circulate through it. The radiator is made from metal and has a plastic overflow reservoir. If your engine overheats, the radiator can prove dangerous. The radiator cap could explode.
Signs that the Radiator is Bad
Overheating is an indicator that your SUV’s radiator is damaged. If your SUV starts to overheat, pull the vehicle over and cut the engine. Do not pop the hood and remove the radiator cap until the engine has cooled completely. The cap could explode and you may end up with scorching coolant spraying everywhere. Third-degree burns can result. This is one indication that your radiator is faulty.
Another indication that the radiator is faulty is leaking engine coolant. This happens if the bottom of the radiator gets corroded and the corrosion eat through the metal. The coolant may turn orange, which could indicate that the radiator has become corroded. If you look carefully, you might see rust flakes within the coolant. Corroded radiators are bad because they introduce corrosion to the cooling system.
Clogged air inlets are another indicator that your radiator needs to be replaced. Road debris can also cause damage to the inlets. Call our shop immediately if you have any of these issues. We would be happy to inspect the radiator and recommend the proper course of action. In some cases, this may mean that your SUV needs a new radiator. If this is the case, we will remove the old radiator and install a new one to protect your cooling system and engine.
